ColourPop's Big Sephora Launch Stirs Up Confusion

We're less than one day away from ColourPop's brick and mortar debut at Sephora! But first... ICYMI, here's a quick recap:

Since the brand's inception three years ago, ColourPop products have always been exclusively sold online. The indie brand's playful personality, affordable price tags and cruelty-free pledge has garnered a cult-like fan base and has won the hearts of big YouTube beauty bloggers like ThatGirlShaeXo and JkissaMakeup. Starting tomorrow, U.S. customers will be able to swatch ColourPop products in select stores and order from an authorized retailer for the very first time.

Drama in paradise?

Originally, ColourPop stated that their wallet-friendly prices would stay the same despite Sephora's reputation as a high-end and luxury retailer.

Earlier this week, Sephora revealed which ColourPop items will be available just in time for holiday shopping... and some fans weren't happy.  After claiming to not inflate prices, it seems that ColourPop's statement isn't completely true.

And of course fans took to Twitter to express their frustrations.

But there's an explanation for this decision, right? ColourPop rebutted the negative responses on social media.

Although the above statement from ColourPop is true, the only logical answer to this would be to do a cost breakdown of some of the Sephora exclusive items compared to popular items sold on ColourPop's site.

Don't worry, I did all the calculating so you don't have to. Here's the official breakdown:

ColourPop x Sephora Launch_GlamGameStrong.png

So what's the verdict?

Lip glosses, Super Shock Shadows and bundles will remain the same price. Palettes and other limited edition or exclusive items will vary.

Although ColourPop's promise to keep ALL prices low is technically incorrect, the cost per gram difference between palettes is minuscule. For beauty lovers, there are also other non-quantitative factors to consider like the items being limited edition and Sephora exclusives.

With this in mind, I wouldn't fret about the seemingly increasing price. Go on, don't feel too guilty and get your purge on!

ColourPop Cosmetics will be available on Tuesday, October 31st at sephora.com.

Hits and Misses: September 2017

Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Camouflage Color Corrector

Lancome's color correctors are a fairly new product and it has quickly made it's way into my everyday routine! These are so pigmented and creamy and you only need the tiniest dot to cover dark circles.

Banish Oil

I love using this oil after my P.M. skincare routine! By morning, my skin always feels smooth, hydrated and plump after using it.

Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer

If you're trying to get back that summer glow or extend the life of your self-tan, you need this in your life! It dries and develops quickly and layers great on top of sunless tans.

Maybelline Volum' Express The Colossal Big Shot Mascara

The formula of this mascara isn't too wet or too dry, it's the perfect in between!

Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra-Longwear Foundation

This foundation transferred and creased in my smiles lines which is an area I never experience creasing in. I can't quite justify the steep $48 price tag for its performance.

SEPHORA COLLECTION The Perfectionist: Airbrush Sponge

I found this Sephora sponge to work best for under-eye concealer and baking but it was awkward to hold for foundation. I ended up returning this.

UPDATE: I believe this sponge has also been discontinued.

Dupe Wars: L'Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise vs. Too Faced Better Than Sex [REVIEW]

When I first saw L'Oreal's Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara, it immediately reminded me of Too Faced Better Than Sex (BTS), a tried-and-true beauty guru favorite (and also mine as well) so I knew I had to try it!

You can find Lash Paradise for $8 in-stores and online at retailers like Ulta, Walmart, Rite-Aid, Amazon and Target. The mascara claims to give volume and length without clumping, flakes or smudges.

With this said, here's why I don't think Lash Paradise is a total dupe. Although the mascara wand from both brands are hourglass-shaped, I find that the Too Faced wand picks up more product from the tube. The formula is also slightly wetter and my short lashes appreciate this. With the L'Oreal wand, the bristles in the middle of the wand seem to be more dense and I found myself having to blink into the wand while applying coats in order to wedge my lashes in to get product (I don't usually do this with the majority of my mascaras).

After testing out these mascaras side-by-side for several weeks now, I do notice that Lash Paradise tends to flake more than BTS. I didn't experience any smudging or clumps with either mascara otherwise.

As for packaging, there's a clear difference: BTS has a more expensive and heavier feel to the handle and tube while Lash Paradise is all plastic.

- hourglass-shaped wand
- doesn't leave mascara on lids
- packaging and design

- wand bristles are too dense towards the middle
- dryer formula
- flakes after a few hours of wear

Lash Paradise is a dupe, kind of. I still personally prefer BTS because it takes less time to build up volume due to the wetter formula but if you don't mind spending a few extra minutes primping your lashes, then I would say go for Lash Paradise.

Too Faced Faces Lawsuit from Tatcha for Packaging Infringement

Privately held Japanese beauty brand Tatcha, has filed a trade dress claim against one of Estée Lauder's companies, Too Faced, for copying its lipstick packaging.

On August 2nd, TrendMood posted a sneak peek of the lipsticks from Too Faced's newest Peaches and Cream collection. Several comments on Instagram mention eerie similarities to Tatcha's packaging, which was also used as evidence in the lawsuit.

Neither company has released an official statement on the pending suit. Do you think Tatcha has a reasonable case against Too Faced?

Becca Cosmetics Reveals Its Newest Highlighter [UPDATE]

Becca Cosmetics recently invited fans to vote for the next Shimmering Skin Perfector. The contenders were 'Smoky Quartz,' a muted, dusty rose with silver tones, and 'Golden Mint,' a green-yellow base with gold reflects.

The contest began on Monday and it looks like we have a winner!

Pre-orders are open now on their site. Will this be your new must-have?

Wet N Wild MegaGlo Highlighting Powder [REVIEW]

A few weeks ago, Wet N Wild Beauty launched two new shades of the cult-favorite MegaGlo Highlighting Powders. I ordered the two lighter shades in 'Blossom Glow' and 'Golden Flower Crown' for $4.99 each. They also released two deeper shades in 'Botanic Dream' and 'Royal Calyx.'

If you're trying to achieve a "wet" highlighter look, these are perfect for just that and more! All shades give off a buildable metallic sheen without the chunkiness of glitter.

One of my favorite things about this highlighter is its versatility. You can achieve a healthy, luminous glow or build it up to a blinding beam of light.

Fan brush: I used the Sephora Collection PRO Fan Brush #65 and although it applied a nice and even sheen layer, I experienced quite a bit of fallout. Glitter flecks had made their way to the sides of my nose, contour and even chin.

I suggest this method if you're looking for a very natural wash of color. Just remember to tap off excess product.

Domed highlighting brush: This was my favorite way of applying this highlighter. I used the e.l.f. Highlighting Brush and had the best color-payoff with this method. I didn't experience any fallout because by using a denser brush, it allowed me to buff glitter chunks and micro-glitters away leaving a true metallic sheen.

You'll need to be light-handed and have some patience with this method.

I was able to get approximately eight hours of wear before noticing the product dulling down throughout the rest of the day.

- pigmented
- long-lasting
- soft to the touch
- buildable

- glitter fallout with some application techniques

For nearly five bucks, you get intense color-payoff and an expensive looking glow. Go ahead, get your glow on!

Becca Cosmetics Wants You to Pick Its Next Limited Edition Highlighter

Facebook / @beccacosmetics

Facebook / @beccacosmetics

Becca Cosmetics is giving fans the power to choose their next limited edition highlighter! Based off of Becca's swatches, Golden Mint has a green-yellow base with golden reflect. Smoky Quartz looks like a mauvy, dusty pink with a cool-toned reflect.

I'm a sucker for golden highlighters so I'm leaning towards Team Golden Mint. Only one shade will be released, so which one will you be voting for?

anastasia beverly hills subculture palette

As a huge ABH fan, I was surprisingly disappointed by this palette. See my detailed review here.

L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base

This primer did reduce the appearance of my pores but didn't keep me matte in my T-zone throughout the day. For $11, you get 0.5 oz of product and is a little steep for a drugstore item.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette [REVIEW]

My first impression of the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture palette was that it was BEAUTIFUL! I absolutely love the cohesiveness with its sister palette, Modern Renaissance (MR), but overall performance was lackluster. This palette had the most kickup than any palette I've ever owned, even when gently patting the pans with a dense brush as suggested by ABH.

'Cube' and 'Electric' are both duo chrome shadows. They have different formulas compared to the mattes and also harder press with a cream-to-powder consistency. Both barely showed on the eye (even with MAC Fix+) using the ABH brush that came with it. I was only able to achieve color pay-off with a finger. I think that these shadows were intended to be toppers or for pops of corner on the brow bone, inner corners or middle of lids (which performed great in this manner by the way).

On the other hand, the mattes are a softer press (as stated by Norvina here) and makes the shadows super powdery and very hard to layer on top of each other. It's quite difficult to build up to intense color pay-off without blowing the color out too much. I noticed this particularly when I was blending one color into another.

Top row: finger swatches, bottom: brush swatches

Despite being a part of the single shadow permanent collection, 'Fudge' was reformulated and included in the Subculture palette. The first ingredient in MR shadows is mica while Subculture's is talc, an ingredient that is also found in baby powder. Talc and mica are both minerals, but talc's properties help absorb oil and make a product more smooth and matte. On the contrary, products with mica tend to give off a more radiant finish. If you compare the ingredients of MR and Subculture, the ingredients list for MR is much more comprehensive but do contain more filler ingredients. So in theory, one could say that Subculture is literally more pigmented than MR.

Because of the softer press, it means that you MUST be oh so gentle with this palette. I definitely wouldn't suggest traveling with this unless its in your carry-on bag. If you're like me and are the kind of person who prefers to pack on product and then blend, then this palette isn't for you. We are creatures of routine, so for most people it's a hassle to change your everyday technique in order to use a specific product. Even when I did change my technique and lightly tapped my brush once into a matte shadow, I did notice minimal fallout but still a fair amount of kickup which still wastes product.

- pigmented
- colors are cohesive
- packaging and design

- colors aren't "true" (they look different in and out of pan)
- too softly pressed; insane amount of kickup and fallout
- blends patchy and shadows skip when layered on top of each other - mattes were too powdery; nearly blended into nothing especially when layered

I will be purchasing another Subculture palette to give it a fair shot as I've seen many inconsistencies across the internet from fallout to oxidizing colors. I also hope there is a different shadow press for future batches to minimize fallout and kickup. I was quite disappointed during my first week of playing with this palette because I was already seeing dips in the shadow pans.

This is a palette for those with a light hand and don't mind spending the extra time to blend out and really work with the colors.
